Legal Metrology: Model Approval

The Legal metrology Department issues the Model Approval to the manufacturers and importers of weights and measuring products. The model approval certification is defined under the Legal Metrology Act of 2009. The importers and manufacturers of such products have to apply for and obtain the model approval certificate from the Legal Metrology Department.

What makes you eligible to apply for Model Approval Certificate?

According to the legal metrology model approval, the importer or the manufacturer of the weights and measurement product must meet the regulatory requirements of the Legal metrology department. The manufacturers of weight or measure must ensure that the photograph or the schematic diagram of the sealing provision of the model adheres to the following guidelines.

Model Imaging:

• The photograph must be clear and legible.
• The photograph must be of the model only without any object being weighed.
• Except for the declaration, no other information should be provided on the sealing of the product.
• If the weighbridge is the product, then the photo of the indicator must be sent separately without showing it on the weighbridge platform.

 

Model Schema:

 

• The schematic diagram must be clear and readable.
• The applicant must design a schematic diagram which indicates whether sealing is done by passing the wire through the hole on the body of the model itself/ of the indicator or through nuts and bolts etc.
• The schematic diagram must indicate the manner, location, and nature of sealing and the particular side of the model or of the indicator. They must also mention about the sealing done on them on the rear end or at the sides. The applicant must seal the model by lead and wire, etc. 
• A written description of the sealing provision should also be provided for better clarity and incorporated into the final certificate.                    

 

How to apply for the Model Approval Certificate?

The process of model approval certification is as follows:

• Firstly, furnish the requisite documents.
• Secondly, file the approval application along with the documents.
• Also, submit the product sample along with the application to the Department of Legal Metrology. 
• The Department will then assess the submitted application as well as the sample product and send it for testing.
• Then, the applicant must forward the sample to the Directorate General.
• Note: If the applicant is an importer, there is no need to send the product for sample testing.
• If the product fits the regulatory requirements of the Legal Metrology Department, then you’ll obtain the Legal Metrology Certificate.

The applicant must submit the following documents along with the application form for model approval certification.

• CoI (Certificate of Incorporation) of the applicant company
• Business license(s) held by the applicant company.
• Two passport-size photographs of the applicant.
• Duly filled application form
• Schematic diagram of the product(s).
• Sealing provisions description
• The importer must provide a declaration stating that it made  no changes to the product before its distribution.
